"I have always been sceptical of "Wonder Products" that claim to made you attractive to members of the opposite sex or make you rich overnight. So when a very longstanding, friend suggested that I might like to try this rust treatment product on one of my old cars, I was a little wary.
The product is called Rust Away, and is an environmentally safe product that is water based. I understand that it will not harm the skin, and does not attack any rubber or plastic parts of the component being cleaned. It all sounded too good, but would it make me taller or more intelligent?
So I obtained a bottle and decided to carry out my own test. For this I selected a very rusty hydraulic brake cylinder that still had bits of the old rubber boot attached, and seized pistons. Following the instructions the cylinder was dipped in water, then without wire brushing off the loose surface rust, it was fully immersed in Rust Away for 24 hours.
The fluid turned from a colourless liquid, to a dark brown colour during this time. When I removed the cylinder the next day, all the loose rust had gone, the pistons were free and all the metal surfaces were a light grey colour. I washed the component in fresh water, and let it dry. It now looks ready to take a coat of paint, and after fitting new seals it could be reused. The rubber parts were unaffected by this treatment.
Conclusions; I was very impressed, and I am going to buy some more, to treat larger items. As each component has to be immersed, bigger bits take more fluid. However it can be used several times, and filtered through kitchen paper to clean it up. When it finally stops working, it can be poured down the drain, as it is biodegradable. I must use it to treat the inside of the petrol tank on the Morris. This can be carried out by putting, for example, two litres in the tank, and rotating it every 24 hrs, so that a different part is treated.
